2022-23 BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League – HK U23 0:5 Eastern 2022-12-04

HK U23 played host to Eastern on a glorious Sunday afternoon in Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground for the lone BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League fixture of the day. Eastern went firing on all cylinders and cruised past HK U23 through a 5:0 victory away from home.

Barely four minutes into the game, HK U23 produced an early threat0. Lai Pui-kei floated a teasing free-kick into the Eastern box. The Eastern defense managed to clear the ball away, yet HK U23’s Kwok Tsz-kaai picked up the ball outside the box and pulled the trigger, only to send it wide off target.

Eastern broke the game open on the 9th minute. A series of clever passes on the right wing saw Sun Ming-him penetrated deep and delivered a low cross towards the middle. Victor Bertomeu took care of the rest and fired the ball home with ease. The visitors were now in front with a 1:0 lead.

A few minutes later, it was Eastern once again. Wong Tsz-ho whipped a great cross into the HK U23 penalty area. Marcos Gondra took up great position in the doorstep and nodded the ball towards the net, only to send it over the crossbar.

Eastern managed to double its lead on the 29th minute, as Wong Tsz-ho flashed out a great move down the left wing, lost his marker and pushed into the HK U23 penalty area. Wong picked out teammate Wong Ho-chun with a soft pass and the latter completed the simple task by tucking the ball into the net. Eastern was now leading 2:0 at this stage.

The visitors were not done and added another goal on the 32nd minute. Sun Ming-him knocked a low cross towards the middle. A group of players missed the ball in the goal-mouth, setting up Alexander Jojo nicely, who easily slotted the ball into the HK U23 net. The score was now 3:0 with Eastern in front.

A minute later, Eastern expanded its lead further, as a long ball from the Eastern defense punched through the HK U23 defense, forcing HK U23 defender Marco Cheung to apply a rather desperate header, trying to send the ball back to his own goalkeeper. Unfortunately for HK U23, Cheung’s header somehow eluded all parties and entered the net, giving Eastern a four-goal lead.

On the 39th minute, Eastern produced another dangerous scoring chance. Emilio Estevez picked up the ball through a teammate’s through pass, then pulled the trigger with a sliding shot, forcing HK U23 goalkeeper Ngan Ho-tin to pave the ball away. The first half ended with Eastern leading HK U23 by 4:0.

It was more or less the same early in the second half, as Eastern netted another goal. Wong Ho-chun’s thunderous left footer on the 48th minute was nicely paved away by Ngan Ho-tin in the HK U23 net. Midfielder Wu Chun-ming scooped up the rebound and tapped it home with ease. Eastern continues to pull away with a 5:0.

It was still Eastern afterwards. On the 59th minute, Wong Ho-chun made a darting run down the right side and sent the ball towards the middle. Emilio Estevez fired a quick shot but was turned away by HK U23 goalkeeper Ngan Ho-tin. Estevez went for the rebound but failed to get past Ngan once again.

On the 76th minute, HK U23 generated a rare scoring chance. A couple slick passes from HK U23 sent Chan Yun-tung into the Eastern penalty area. Chan unloaded a quick shot but was turned aside by goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.

Several minutes later, it was HK U23 once again. This time, Tang In-chim sent Chan Yun-tung through with a lovely forward pass. Chan fired a tight angle shot from the right side of the Eastern box but was stopped by a charging Yapp Hung-fai once again.

Deep in stoppage time, Eastern had one more chance to add to its lead. Tamirlan Kozubaev connected with a teammate’s cross and dished out a point-blank header towards the HK U23 goal, only to be denied by a solid reaction save from Ngan Ho-tin in net. Kozubaev unleashed on the rebound but fired the ball over the crossbar from the HK U23 doorstep.

The 5:0 stood all the way towards the final whistle, as Eastern edged HK U23 and snatched all three points from the premier league encounter.
