Happy Valley faced off against Eastern Long Lions on Saturday evening in Mongkok Stadium for one of the two BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League fixtures of the day. Happy Valley and Eastern Long Lions exchanged goals on the evening and eventually settled on a 1:1 draw.
Eastern Long Lions came up with early chances to get in front, yet Wong Tsz-ho’s shot failed to locate the intended target, while Fernando Pedreira’s long-range attempt was smartly claimed by Happy Valley goalkeeper To Chun-kiu.
Happy Valley nearly took the lead on the 10th minute, as Charlie Scott unloaded a ferocious shot from the edge of the box but saw the ball rung off the Eastern Long Lions crossbar. A Happy Valley player went for the rebound but saw his header turned aside by a sprawling Yapp Hung-fai in the Eastern Long Lions net.
It was back to Eastern Long Lions’ turn on the 16th minute, as Fernando Pedreira delivered a dangerous cross to the Happy Valley penalty area. Wong Tsz-ho connected with the ball but smashed it wide.
Eastern Long Lions had a glorious chance to break the game open on the 33rd minute, as Fernando Pedreira was brought down by a Happy Valley player inside the penalty area. The referee quickly awarded Eastern Long Lions a penalty shot. Striker Lucas Da Silva assumed the spot-kick duty but saw his shot denied by To Chun-kiu in the Happy Valley goal. The game remained scoreless at this point.
Happy Valley drew first blood of the game on the 38th minute, as Lam Hin-ting unleashed a cracking shot from the left side of the Eastern Long Lions box. Lam’s shot hit the back of the Eastern Long Lions goal with authority, giving goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai absolutely no chance whatsoever.
Happy Valley almost made it a two-goal lead late in the first half. On the 45th minute, Charlie Scott’s shot from the edge of the box was smartly pushed aside by Eastern Long Lions goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai. The ball then hit the goal-post and stayed out of the net. Happy Valley was up by a goal heading into half time.
It was still Happy Valley early in the second half. On the 48th minute, Yuen Sai-kit teed up teammate Mikael Severo with a lovely forward pass. The latter dashed into the Eastern Long Lions box and fired a running shot but hit the side-netting.
Eastern Long Lions had a half decent chance to tie the game on the 53rd minute, as Jared Lum’s corner-kick delivery found a surging Luis Chebel inside the Happy Valley box. The latter dished out a powerful header but could not hit the target with his effort.
On the 57th minute, Eastern Long Lions finally drew level, as Jared Lum connected with a Fernando Pedreira corner-kick delivery and headed the ball home. The game was now tied at 1:1.
Eastern Long Lions almost went in front on the 60th minute. Wong Tsz-ho’s shot from inside the box was smartly turned away by To Chun-kiu in the Happy Valley goal. Alessandro Leonardo tried to convert the rebound but smashed the ball over the crossbar from point-blank distance.
On the 70th minute, Happy Valley had a wonderful chance to regain its lead. Robert Odu fought off pressure from an Eastern Long Lions defender and fired away. However, Odu was forced to rush his shot and could not locate the target with his effort.
Robert Odu had another chance to put Happy Valley in front on the 80th minute, yet a right-footer from the Nigerian failed to trouble Eastern Long Lions goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.
Happy Valley probably should have gone in front late in the game. On the 83rd minute, the lively Robert Odu shook off pressure from two Eastern Long Lions players, then found just enough space to unload a powerful shot towards goal. Unfortunately for Happy Valley, Odu’s shot hit the woodwork and stayed out of the net.
The 1:1 score stood towards the final whistle, as Happy Valley and Eastern Long Lions shook hands on a well-fought draw.
