|2020-21 HKFA Sapling Cup Group B - RCFC 1:2 Eastern Long Lions
RCFC took on Eastern Long Lions on Sunday afternoon in Siu Sai Wai Sports Ground for the last remaining Sapling Cup Group B fixture of the group-stage. Eastern Long Lions conceded the first goal of the game but stormed back and snatched a 2:1 victory over RCFC.
RCFC stunned Eastern Long Lions with the opening goal of the game. On the 9th minute, a well-executed set-piece, started by Lam Fu-kwai, triggered a series of slick passes by several RCFC players. The ball eventually reached Law Chun-yan inside the Eastern Long Lions box and the latter took care of the rest by tucking the ball home. RCFC established a quick lead early in the game.
Eastern Long Lions did not trail for long and duly tied the game on the 13th minute. Midfielder Diego Moreira carved open the RCFC defense with a superb forward pass. Alessandro Leonardo gave chase, reached the ball before RCFC goalkeeper Pong Cheuk-hei, flicked it above the keeper and found the back of the empty net. The game was now tied at 1:1.
On the 21st minute, RCFC skipper Carles Tena attempted an ambitious long-range drive but failed to locate the intended target, as his strike drifted wide off the Eastern Long Lions goal.
On the other end, it was Eastern Long Lions that pulled ahead. Everton Camargo caused havoc down the left wing and knocked the ball towards the penalty area. Alessandro Leonardo took down the ball with his right foot, then quickly blasted it home. The score was now 2:1 with Eastern Long Lions in front.
RCFC came up with a decent chance to tie the game on the 39th minute, when a strong RCFC attacking move saw Jordon Brown picking up the ball outside the Eastern Long Lions penalty area. Brown did not hesitate and let rip a thunderous shot that missed hitting the target. RCFC was still down by a goal.
Both sides returned to the dressing room for half-time with Eastern Long Lions ahead 2:1.
RCFC almost drew level early in the second half. On the 47th minute, Law Chun-yan found daylight near the edge of the Eastern Long Lions box but somehow fired the ball wide.
Eastern Long Lions had a great chance to expand its lead on the 62nd minute, as Lucas Da Silva made a powerful run down the right flank, shook off tight pressure from an RCFC defender and pushed forward into the box. The Brazilian forward managed to get off a strike but could not find the target with his shot.
On the other end, RCFC continued to search for the equalizer. On the 77th minute, Liu Yik-shing worked together with a teammate, broke behind the Eastern Long Lions defense with the ball and went one-on-one against goalkeeper Tsang Man-fai. Liu tried to pull off a quick shot but was denied by a charging Tsang from the Eastern Long Lions net.
On the 89th minute, RCFC skipper Carles Tena tried one last ditch effort to tie the game for his side but once again missed finding the Eastern Long Lions goal with his long-range blast.
Both sides failed to add to the score in the remaining regulation time, as Eastern Long Lions came back from a one-goal deficit and beat RCFC 2:1.
