Eastern Long Lions took on premier league new boys RCFC on Saturday afternoon in Mongkok Stadium for the first BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League fixture of the new domestic football season. Eastern Long Lions went firing on all cylinders and shutout RCFC through a 5:0 victory.
RCFC wasted no time and came up with the first shot of the game on the 2nd minute, as Felipe Sa unloaded a tight-angle shot from the right-flank that was smartly handled by Eastern Long Loins goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai. Shortly afterwards, Felipe Sa had another decent scoring chance and tried his luck from the right wing but somehow curled his shot way off target.
On the 9th minute, it was RCFC once again. This time, skipper Liu Yik-shing made a darting run straight towards the Eastern Long Lions defense and belted a low drive towards goal, only to be easily claimed by Yapp Hung-fai. Moments later, Wong Wai-kwok picked up the ball through a teammate’s pass and one-timed at the delivery from inside the Eastern Long Lions penalty area. However, goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai proved equal to the task and pulled out another timely save.
Afterwards, Eastern Long Lions began to find its footing and started to generate its own scoring chances. On the 14th minute, Wong Wai delivered a teasing corner-kick into the RCFC box. Lucas Da Silva soared high but headed the ball wide off target. Shortly afterwards, Alessandro Leonardo teed up Lucas Da Silva with a short, rolling pass. The burly Eastern Long Lions striker fired a running shot from the edge of the RCFC box but sent the ball wide across the goal.
Lucas Da Silva continued to lead the line for Eastern Long Lions and remains his side’s most lively forward in the early goings. On the 20th minute, the Brazilian striker spun-and-fired from inside the RCFC box but smashed the ball way off target.
On the 21st minute, Eastern Long Lions came extremely close to opening the score. Alessandro Leonardo found enough daylight down the left wing and knocked the ball towards the middle. Lucas Da Silva unloaded a ferocious volley but blasted the ball straight at the RCFC goal-post. It was end-to-end action in the early goings.
Eastern Long Lions were handed a great opportunity to take the lead. On the 29th minute, Alessandro Leonardo was brought down inside the RCFC box by an opposing player. The referee pointed straight to the penalty-spot and awarded Eastern Long Lions with a penalty shot. Alessandro Leonardo assumed the spot-kick duty and duly found the back of the net. Eastern Long Lions were up by a goal.
Eastern Long Lions’ fortune took a downturn on the 32nd minute, as Chen Hao-wei picked up a straight red card from the referee and was sent-off. Eastern Long Lions were down to ten men for the remainder of the game.
On the 39th minute, ten men Eastern Long Lions doubled its lead. Wong Wai swung a lovely corner-kick towards the RCFC goal-mouth. Lucas Da Silva beat Wong Lok to the ball and fired it home with ease. It was now 2:0 with Eastern Long Lions in front.
Early in the second half, Eastern Long Lions went further in front through a penalty-kick. Defender Eduardo Praes was brought down inside the box by an RCFC player. The referee awarded Eastern Long Lions another penalty-kick. Lucas Da Silva tucked the ball home and sent Eastern Long Lions in front 3:0.
On the 53rd minute, RCFC had a half decent chance to pull one back, yet Felipe Sa’s shot from the right wing lacked the required pace and angle to beat Eastern Long Lions goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.
Eastern Long Lions made it 4:0 on the 61st minute. Wong Tsz-ho’s cross was headed towards the RCFC goal by Chung Wai-keung. Chung’s header was tipped by RCFC goalkeeper Lam Chun-kit, hit the crossbar and stayed out of the net. Everton Camargo was in great positioned and duly nodded the rebound home.
RCFC did not give up and kept trying to get on the scoreboard. On the 66th minute, Felipe Sa cut inside from the right wing and drilled a dangerous shot towards the Eastern Long Lions net, only to send the ball narrowly wide.
RCFC nearly broke the goose-egg on the 77th minute, as Albert Canal connected with a teammate’s corner-kick delivery and chested the ball towards the Eastern Long Lions goal, only to be denied by goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai.
Eastern Long Lions continued the onslaught and made it 5:0 on the 79th minute. Everton Camargo managed to dig the ball towards the RCFC goal-mouth from the left side. Alessandro Leonardo took care of the rest and sent the ball home with an easy strike. Eastern Long Lions were cruising at the moment.
The score stood towards the final whistle, as Eastern Long Lions defeated RCFC 5:0 in the BOC Life Hong Kong Premier League opener.
