|HKFA receives AFC Annual Awards 2019 - AFC Member Association of the Year (Developing)
Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) welcomed the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to host their annual event in Hong Kong for the first time. The AFC Annual Awards 2019 was successfully held on the night of 2 December 2019 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with over 500 delegates from the world and Asian football sector. During the award ceremony, HKFA was announced to be the winner of AFC Annual Awards 2019 – AFC Member Association of the Year (Developing).
Mr. Timothy Fok, President of HKFA, represented HKFA and received the award on stage. HKFA is honoured to be selected as AFC Member Association of the Year (Developing), which recognizes our governance, contribution to development and promotion of football games in all levels, including grassroots and youth development, women’s football and community outreach. The opening of Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Centre has provided a new football base for HKFA activities, Hong Kong team training for both senior and junior, a centre for referee development and coach education. There has been a significant growth in both youth development, girls’ football and futsal in all age groups. And the Men’s Senior team has qualified for the Finals of EAFF E-1 Football Championship in December 2019.
Moreover, HKFA would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our partners and sponsors, particularly our strategic and long-term partners The Hong Kong Jockey Club and The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. HKFA has been striving to achieve significant progress in terms of youth development, especially the programmes targeted for the “golden age” from U6 to U12 in both boys and girls. Some of the recent highlights include Jockey Club Youth Football Development Programme which attracts over 11,000 children in 2019 participating this grassroots programmes, receiving coaching in a fun environment over a five-week period and for some experience game day competitions for the first time. Together with the above-mentioned partners and Wofoo Social Enterprises, HKFA has been continuing to develop on girls’ football and futsal programmes, that contributes the growth of the base of young footballers and futsal players in Hong Kong and provides the football talent of the future in Asia.
Hong Kong holds a special place in the history of Asian Football and the AFC, as the birthplace of the Confederation’s Secretariat in 1954. As one of the founding members of the AFC, Hong Kong also set the stage for the first-ever edition of Asia’s premier football competition – the AFC Asian Cup in 1956.
