2018-19 HKFA FA Cup – Best Union Yuen Long 0:2 Kwoon Chung Southern 2019-05-12

Best Union Yuen Long and Kwoon Chung Southern locked horns on Sunday afternoon in Mongkok Stadium for a FA Cup semi-final fixture. Goals from Zeshan Reham and James Ha proved to be the difference of the game, as Kwoon Chung Southern went on to defeat Best Union Yuen Long 2:0 and powered its way into the FA Cup final.

Both sides started the game slow and the first scoring chance did not occur until ten minutes into the game. Kwoon Chung Southern’s Wellingsson De Souza picked up the ball past the half-way line, then shook off his marker and fired a long-range shot but could not hit the target.

The Hong Kong Island-side opened the score on the 15th minute. Carlos Bertoldi floated a teasing freekick into the Best Union Yuen Long box. Keeper Chan Ka-ho managed to punch the ball away. Wellingsson De Souza collected the ball near the edge of the box and let rip but saw his shot beautifully saved by Chan Ka-ho. James Ha then teed up Zeshan Rehman, allowing the latter to send an acrobatic shot into the back of the Best Union Yuen Long net.

Best Union Yuen Long generated a rare scoring chance on the 29th minute, as Fabio Alcantara spotted a wide-open Cheung Kin-fung down the left-wing. Cheung unloaded a cracking shot from the left-flank but could not find the target.

On the 32nd minute, it was Kwoon Chung Southern’s turn. This time, Dhiego Martins picked out a surging Wellingsson De Souza with a fine forward pass. The latter let rip from inside the box but ended up hitting the side-netting.

Best Union Yuen Long nearly tied the game late in the first half. On the 43rd minute, Cheung Kin-fung fired a sweet curling freekick towards the Kwoon Chung Southern net, only to be spectacularly turned aside by Tse Tak-him in goal.

Kwoon Chung Southern came up with a half-decent scoring chance on the 63rd minute, as Wellingsson De Souza’s shot from the top of the box failed to hit the Best Union Yuen Long goal.

On the other end, Best Union Yuen Long’s Jean Moser fired a powerful shot near the edge of the Kwoon Chung Southern penalty area but hit an opposing player with his shot. The Brazilian then latched on the rebound but blasted the ball high.

Best Union Yuen Long generated a wonderful chance on the 67th minute. A Best Union Yuen Long player floated a dangerous cross towards the middle. The ball was nodded away by a Kwoon Chung Southern defender. Fabio Alcantara stepped up and unloaded a howitzer towards goal but saw his shot hitting the goal-post and staying out of the net.

The New Territories side kept the pressure coming and continued to knock on the Kwoon Chung Southern door. On the 70th minute, Jean Moser connected with a Cleiton De Oliveira cross but could not locate the Kwoon Chung Southern goal with his header.

On the 82nd minute, Kwoon Chung Southern made it 2:0. Marko Krasic did great work down the left wing and sent the ball towards the goal-mouth. Kessi Dos Santos tried to clear the ball away but did so ineffectively. James Ha pounced on the loose ball and sent it straight into the Best Union Yuen Long net.

The score stood towards the final whistle, as Kwoon Chung Southern held on to its lead and defeated Best Union Yuen Long 2:0.
