|2018-19 HKFA FA Cup – Dreams FC 1:2 Kitchee
Kitchee and Dreams FC crossed swords in Mongkok Stadium on Friday evening for an FA Cup semi-final fixture. Helio Goncalves’ late goal in the game proved to be the eventual match-winner, as Kitchee defeated Dreams FC 2:1 and made it to the FA Cup final.
Kitchee wasted no time and launched early attacks towards the Dreams FC goal. However, Jorge Tarres’ header and Ju Yingzhi’s shot both failed to find the back of the Dreams FC net.
On the 8th minute, it was Dreams FC’s turn. Lui Man-tik delivered a great cross towards the middle from the right-flank. Jordan Lam went darting in but nodded the ball over the Kitchee crossbar.
A minute later, it was back to Kitchee’s turn. This time, Fernando Pedreira whipped a teasing cross into the Dreams FC box. Ju Yingzhi teed up Krisztian Vadocz with a soft past. The latter stepped up and unloaded but smashed the ball straight towards the terrace.
On the 19th minute, Dreams FC had successive chances to take the lead. Unfortunately, Jordan Lam’s shot was smartly turned away by Kitchee goalkeeper Wang Zhenpeng, while Ignacio Martinez’s close-range strike soared over the Kitchee crossbar.
Dreams FC almost took the lead on the 39th minute, as Lam Hin-ting sent a great ball into the Kitchee danger area. Diego Higino went flying in but failed to hit the target with his header.
Right before half-time, Kitchee generated a wonderful goal-scoring chance. This time, Fernando Pedreira knocked the ball into the Dreams FC penalty area. Jared Lum took up great position but re-directed the ball wide.
Kitchee came out for the second-half strong and nearly took an early lead, as Krisztian Vadocz connected with a Jorge Tarres pass but acrobatically fired the ball wide. The score was still 0:0 at this point.
On the other end, it was back to Dreams FC’s turn. Diego Higino had the ball in possession, then changed direction and picked out a surging Lam Hin-ting with a fine pass. Lam took down the ball nicely and let rip, only to be turned away by Kitchee goalkeeper Wang Zhenpeng.
Finally, it was Kitchee that opened the score on the 55th minute, as Jared Lum latched onto Tong Kin-man’s header and re-directed the ball home through a flying effort. Kitchee was up 1:0.
Kitchee came up with yet another chance on the 65th minute. Ju Yingzhi sent a short corner-kick to Fernando Pedreira. The latter fired a teasing left-footer from the top of the box but was brilliantly turned aside by Dreams FC goalkeeper To Chun-kiu.
Dreams FC tied the game at 1:1 on the 67th minute, as Marcos Gondra unleashed a cracking free-kick that hit the back of the Kitchee net with authority. It was a sensational strike by the Spaniard.
Kitchee tried to re-establish its lead and nearly did so on the 75th minute. However, Daniel Cancela’s long-range bomb failed to trouble Dreams FC goalkeeper To Chun-kiu.
Kitchee took the lead once again on the 82nd minute. Matthew Lam floated a great free-kick into the Dreams FC box. Helio Goncalves leapt high and headed the ball home at the far-post. It was now 2:1 with Kitchee in front.
Late in the game, Dreams FC’s Leung Kwok-wai almost equalized for his side through a cracking shot. However, Kitchee goalkeeper Wang Zhenpeng stood tall and pulled out a spectacular flying save.
The score stood towards the final whistle, as Kitchee held on to its lead and defeated Dreams FC 2:1 on the evening.
